Wenjun Hotel - a charming little place with too many stairs |
Day 1
Day 1’s are ugly. Up early. Drive to Brisbane. Fly to Hong
Kong. Run frantically around Hong Kong airport looking for Gate 500 and
something. Fly to Chengdu. Meet up with everyone, including Bob and Karyll who
were arriving from Singapore. [This turned out to be surprisingly simple. Our
strategy? Stand in line and have them find us.]
Meet Summer, our smiling
Chinese Bird Guide who speaks seemingly perfect English, having learned it
entirely within China.

Summer - still smiling on her first full day with us. |
And then a forty minute drive on our bus through the
streets of Chengdu – a rather large city of some 14 million people – to our
historic hotel in the historic part of town. Our rooms, naturally, were on the
fourth floor and, being a historic hotel it had no lifts. Some of the group
nearly became history themselves with the extreme effort required to make a
foor floor luggage lug. The hotel’s name is Wenjun and with breakfast at 7-30
we’ll take some pics or appropriate some from the net.
